Healthy Kids. Strong Families.
Supporting connection at home is part of how we build thriving communities.
In this series, we share practical tools to help families nurture confidence, communication, and resilience — one everyday moment at a time.

Every parent wants the same thing when they leave their child in someone else's care.
You want your child to be safe.
You want them to be happy.
You want them to feel like they belong.
Whether you're looking for before-school care, after-school care, a School's Out program, or summer camp, you're making an important decision. While schedules, locations, and costs all matter, they don't tell the whole story.
The better question isn't simply:
"Who will watch my child?"
It's:
"Who will help my child grow?"
Every Moment Matters
Children spend hundreds of hours each year in before and after school programs, school break programs, and summer camps.
These aren't just the hours before school starts or after the final bell rings. They're opportunities for children to build friendships, discover new interests, develop confidence, and practice life skills that will stay with them long after childhood.
The best programs recognize that children need different things throughout the day and throughout the year. Before school, they need a calm, welcoming environment that helps them start the day feeling confident and connected. After school, they need time to unwind, move, play, and reconnect after a structured day in the classroom. During school breaks and summer, they need opportunities to explore, create, and experience the joy of being a kid. When those experiences are intentional, every season becomes an opportunity for growth.
Look Beyond the Schedule
When comparing child care programs, it's natural to ask:
What are the hours?
Is transportation available?
What activities are offered?
What's included in the tuition?
Is homework time available?
Those are all important questions.
But there are other questions that can tell you even more about a program's culture:
Will my child be greeted warmly every day?
Do staff take the time to learn what my child enjoys?
How are friendships encouraged?
How do adults respond when children disagree or struggle?
Is there time for children to play, imagine, and make choices?
Does the program adapt to children's interests, or does every day follow a rigid schedule?
The answers reveal whether a program is simply supervising children—or intentionally helping them thrive.

Play Is More Than Fun
Sometimes parents worry that a program includes "too much play."
In reality, play is one of the most powerful ways children learn.
When children play, they practice:
Solving problems together.
Working through disagreements.
Sharing ideas.
Leading and following.
Thinking creatively.
Building resilience when things don't go as planned.
These skills aren't taught through worksheets or lectures. They develop naturally when children have meaningful opportunities to explore, collaborate, and create.
Friendships Are Built One Moment at a Time
One of the greatest gifts a child care program can provide is a sense of belonging.
Friendships grow through shared experiences—building forts, creating art, inventing games, solving challenges, and laughing together.
Adults can't choose a child's friends, but they can create an environment where every child feels welcomed, included, and encouraged to connect with others.
When children feel like they belong, everything else becomes easier. They become more willing to participate, take healthy risks, try new things, and develop genuine confidence.
Growth Is the Result
Many programs focus on keeping children busy.
The best programs focus on helping children flourish.
When children have the freedom to play, opportunities to build friendships, and caring adults who know them well, remarkable things begin to happen.
They become more confident.
More responsible.
More resilient.
More compassionate.
More independent.
They begin to develop integrity—not because someone tells them to, but because they experience it every day through relationships, choices, and shared responsibility.
Questions to Ask Before You Enroll
Whether you're visiting a before-school program, after-school program, School's Out program, or summer camp, consider asking:
How do you help children feel welcome on their first day?
How do you encourage friendships?
What role does play have in your daily schedule?
How do you help children solve conflicts?
How do children develop confidence and independence here?
How do you balance structure with children's interests and choices?
What do you hope every child gains from spending time in your program?
The answers will tell you much more than a list of activities ever could.
Choosing the Right Fit
Every child is unique.
The right child care program isn't simply the one that fits your schedule.
It's the one where your child feels safe enough to explore, supported enough to build friendships, and encouraged enough to grow into the person they're becoming.
Whether it's before school, after school, during a school break, or throughout the summer, those hours matter.
They're not just a way to fill time.
They're an opportunity to help children discover confidence, kindness, resilience, and joy.
And that's worth choosing carefully.
